    Description

American sculptor Lorado Taft (1860-1936) typed and signed this brief letter
to Mr. C. B. Roden of the Chicago Public Library in which he responds “My studio is a workshop and I send my young people to the art schools for ‘class-work.’”
Taft studied sculpture in Paris at the famous École des Beaux-Arts, studying with Augustin Dumont, Jean-Marie Bonnassieux, and Jules Thomas. He exhibited twice in the Paris Salons while living in Europe. Taft lived in Chicago when he returned to the United States, where he taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago until 1929. His Midway Studios, located near the University of Chicago campus, became a National Historic Landmark in 1965. Taft was the father of U.S. Representative Emily Taft Douglas, and was a distant relative of President William Howard Taft.
Typed on a 10 ½” x 7 ¼” sheet of Taft’s personal stationery imprinted with his Midway Studios address.
