Description
Wow what a beautiful box this is!!! Mid 19th century, with a fitted silk interior in the most beautiful shade of canary yellow! This box dates to around 1845 and has gorgeous mother of pearl inlay on the lid, and front. The box measures 12" x 4.5" x 8". It is executed in Indian rosewood veneers, probably over a mahogany carcass. The inside is fitted for 7 mother of pearl topped reels. It has a pad for tools, complete with a shoe hook, scissors, tatting hook and bodkin. There are 2 needle books, one on either side of the tool pad, and lidded compartments with mother of pearl handles, that hold some 19th century needles and a tiny brass stencil. There is a silver thimble and finger protector also included, though sadly, this piece is missing it's waxer, winder and tape measure that would have filled the 3 holes at the front. It may take some time, but these items can be found. There are also 2 mis-matched mother of pearl winders. The 6 slots at the front would have held a matched set of winders such as this. There is a padded pocket at the back for patterns, and storage space underneath. The box shows normal, age related soiling and wear and tear, which is to be expected for something that's over 170 years old. There is a key, and the lock does appear to be working, but I'm too nervous to actually lock the box with it. I never recommend it for pieces this old.
This piece has been in our collection for some time, but we are downsizing a bit, so some pieces will need to move on to new homes. This is a wonderful, and hard to find piece and would be a jewel in any fine collection! Please ask all questions before purchasing and thanks for looking!
