3. Sustainable development with a view to attain economical, cultural and political independence is the second area of focus
Idea to reality
The idea of an own monetary unit was raised by professor Johan van Zyl who was honorary professor at the University of Pretoria and consultant in community development.  He attended a conference on local development in Orania hosted by the Orania Movement. The Orania Development Forum considered the suggestion and appointed a committee to investigate.  The result was positive, and a local architect, Christiaan van Zyl was given the task to design our “money�.  When the designs were released in April 2004 the artwork and symbolism was widely praised.

The hundred Ora denotes Orania through the “little giant�: a monument depicting the determination to win freedom via doing our own work. The original by Elly Holm adorns a wall in the building housing the Orania Movement.  The steenbok and local Aloes also typify our area.
